NEW ADO BUS SERVICE from CANCUN to BELIZE CITY !
September 4th 2011 Travel Log - Cancun to Belize City
At the end of August, ADO, the Mexican bus company announced a new service from Cancun to Belize City.
At the same time WestJet had some great one way, direct, air fares from Vancouver to Cancun.
We thought this would be a great opportunity to explore a new and less expensive way of Getting to Belize.
Arriving in Cancun at 5:30pm we found the Mexican Immigration to be fast and courteous.
Once we picked up our luggage and passed through Customs, we were greeted by this friendly guy who, sold us tickets for the shuttle to the ADO Bus Terminal. The cost was $15 usd. per person, this was compared to $60 usd. for a taxi. In the end, they put us in a taxi because they did not have enough passengers for the shuttle.
After about a 30 minute taxi ride from the airport we arrived at the new modern ADO terminal in Cancun.
The ticket counter at the ADO Bus Terminal.
The fare to Belize City was around $39 usd. one way. The sheduled departure was 10:15pm.
We had about 3 hours until the bus left so, we decided to go to the restaurant across the street for dinner and a few "DOS EQUIS".
Our bus, a modern Mercedes Benz tourist coach left on time at 10:15pm. We made two stops along the way. First was Playa del Carman where we picked up 2 passengers and then Tulum where we picked up 3 more. In total there were about 15 passengers on board.
Around 3:30 am Mexican time we arrived at the Mexico/Belize border.
We had to pay a $20 usd. exit fee on the Mexican side. On the Belize side they unloaded our luggage and pointed us towards Belize Immigration and Customs.
About a 1/2 hour later we were back on the bus heading to Belize City.
Around 6:30 am, Belize time we were at the Belize City Bus terminal.
At the Belize City terminal there were plenty of buses going to different locations.
We decided we wanted to get home to Plancencia quickly so, we hopped in a taxi to BZE, where we caught the 8:20 am Tropic Air flight.
All in all we found this a great way to Get to Belize and are planning to use this bus service again.
Note: Remember to take a blanket because, the Air Conditioning on the ADO bus works very well.
November 2nd. 2011 Travel Log - Belize City To Cancun
On November 2nd, 2011 we made the return trip from Belize City to Cancun.
We arrived at the Belize City Bus Terminal just before the ticket booth opened at 5pm.
A ticket cost 19 Belize dollars which you pay the agent and another 60 Belize dollars that you paid once you cross over into Mexico, for a total cost of 79 Belize dollars.
- You must show your passport to the Belize agent before he will sell you a ticket.
- You can purchase a ticket from the agent for up to 7 days in advance.
- The Agent's system is all manual, so you must be patient, while he fills out all the forms.
- We were told that on the previous Sunday night all the seats were sold and some people
were left behind. (our bus on the Tuesday night was about half full).
The bus leaves Belize City at 7:30 pm making a stop at Orange Walk at 9:00 pm and Corozal 10:00pm.
We arrived at the Cancun Airport at 3:30am Mexican time (the ADO press release said 6:30am??).
The bus thens continues on to the Cancun Bus Terminal.
November 4nd. 2011 Travel Log - Cancun to Belize City
On November 4th, 2011 after eating and drinking too much at a Cancun all inclusive resort we returned to Belize.
Only a few things to note:
- You must purchase your ticket with U.S. or Peso cash. They will not take a credit card
at the Cancun ADO bus terminal.
- On this trip they did not charge us the $20 usd. exit fee at the Mexican border?
Notes on the ADO Web Site (Not Tourist Friendly)
- It is Spanish only.
- You can only use a Mexican credit card to book online.
- The schedule for Belize City can only be accessed for the current month.
Others Experiences With the ADO Sevice to Cancun
"Hi, I really appreciated your travel blogs about the new ADO bus service and I have a very important information for you and maybe you should post this experience.
I was traveling to Cancun on Monday and had to catch a flight leaving Cancun airport at 9.55am Tuesday morning and nearly missed this flight because of mis-organization of the ADO bus. I called ADO in Mexico to make sure that the bus was running on Monday and after they confirmed I took the 3pm express bus (Valencia bus company) from Benque Viejo del Carmen to Corozal.
The bus reached Corozal at 7.30pm and I immediatly could buy my ticket from the ticket agent in Corozal. There were 6 more passengers waiting for the bus and they all had to catch a flight in Cancun. The Merida bus reached approximately at 9.20pm and left 2 minutes later for Merida. At 10pm the Cancun bus reached and it was absolutely full!!!!
There was not one seat in the bus. But we all had been sold a ticket in Corozal. If we would have known we could have taken an ordinary bus or mini bus and crossed the border but there was no communication and even the ticket officer of ADO did not know anything.
The solution for us was the following: The bus driver took our luggage and we (all 7 people) were standing in the aisle of the bus and have been taken to the border. The moment we had crossed the border and did all paper work 5 of us had to try to take a taxi and ride to Chetumal bus terminal. 2 passsengers with early flight connection had been taken as an exception in the bus to Cancun and had to sit on the floor all the way to Cancun.
There was not one taxi at the border and we had to worry to miss any opportunity. After some forth and back we finally reached Chetumal bus terminal at 15 minutes past midnight and I was the only one who got the last seat in the 0.30 bus to the airport to Cancun. The others had to take a 3am bus to Playa del Carmen/Cancun center and try to get a connection to the airport in Cancun.
It is very important (for my opinion) that you publish these difficulties, as some people nearly missed their flights. ADO will have to find a way to communicate with their agents and maybe it would be wise to establish a Belize phone number and a possibility to pre-book tickets.
Thank You Hans, for the Update.
